Thor Hushovd thought he would find himself in a lead role in the cobbled classics; however he found himself to play a supporting role On Sunday at the Tours of Flanders.
He has been heard stating that anyone who wants to be a leader needs to perform like a leader. Since he has been unable to do that, it only makes sense that Greg takes his place since he has done it for three years. Naturally, Greg should be the leader. However he still aspires to be in the final.
The Norwegian was blunt and to the point at a pre-race press conference of the team that took place in Kortrijk on Friday. He put forward the reasons as to why Greg Van Avermaet was to lead BMC at De Ronde rather than him. He feels that he does not deserve it because he missed two spring campaigns due to lingering illness.
BMC’s line-up is composed of Silvan Dillier and Taylor Phinney who happen to be Tour of Flanders debutants. Hushovd did not really consider himself to be a Flandrian, instead preparing himself for his 13th Ronde. He feels that maybe once he wins the event he will feel like a Flandrian. He is happy to belong to BMC. He is also supportive of Greg as he is the strongest rider. Being part of a strong team of cyclists, he is looking forward to being in the finals.
The thirty six year old Norwegian is yet to make a win this season and has faced disappointments in Milan- San Remo and E3 Harelbeke. However he managed to come in 9th place in Gent Wevelgem which helped boost his morale.
This is the first time that he has shown consistent performance regarding form since joining BMC. He won a national title as well winning in World Tour.
